What is Creative Writing?

My first blog post on BCWI was about the definition of creative writing. The article is entitled "What Is Creative Writing?"

I worry about the academia that centers around creative fiction writing and stage and screenplay writing. I think that if you hold too fast about one particular definition of what creative writing actually is, you may lose sight of your potential contribution to the art form.

That is why I define creative writing as writing from the heart. That way it leaves room for each person to come at writing from his or her own perspective.

Comedy Channel

One of my greatest assets as a writer and someone who instructs writers is my background with improvised comedy. My history with comedy was the impetus behind the creation of the comedy channel.

So far, the main component of the comedy channel is a series of reviews/analyses about various shows that I have seen in the city of Chicago. As the section expands, it will include movies and literature that illustrate various points of comedy from beginning to end. Some people say that comedy is tough and tragedy is easy. If that's true, I hope to be able to help some writers achieve the comic chops they have otherwise been lacking.

Creative Writing Prompts

I've talked to many people who have trouble generating ideas for their writing. One of the best ways to get started is with some creative writing prompts.

Over at BCWI there are now 100 free creative writing prompts, but they aren't just random story starters. All of them center on writing from the heart. Each one touches upon a memory or a hypothetical situation that has the opportunity to be important to you. Whether it be based off of love, death, or family, these creative writing prompts were created in an attempt to really inspire you to come from a place of feeling.

And starting on March 1st, 2009, you will be able to post your response to the prompts on each page. Happy writing!

Creative Writing Exercises

My favorite metaphor for certain skills and abilities in your life is to look at them like muscles. When you work a muscle over time it breaks down and gets bigger when it builds back up. If you believe that, then you must also believe that in order to build up your writing skills you must perform creative writing exercises.

I am in the process of compiling ways that you can improve your abilities to write from the heart. I think that one of the best kinds of writing is the real tough stuff, the guttural feelings, the pain and the beauty of your memories and life. Accessing that kind of material is not easy and the articles on the site understand that. It all starts with allowing yourself the opportunity to experience these past feelings again and it ends with relaxing it out so you can go on with your life.

Give these exercises a shot if you believe that your writing is lacking a personal punch.

Health Fitness

Feel free to believe this statement or not: your brain will work better if you are healthier. I have seen this belief improve my work astronomically and some of the things I've learned are compiled in my website's section Health Fitness.

By implementing raw foods, taking out caffeine, and employing a steady exercise routine, my number of productive hours have tripled throughout my week. I find myself feeling better in general and about myself and the work I get done has just been way better. I fully recommend giving yourself the opportunity to enjoy healthier hours of your life and probably more hours when you get around to the end of it all.

Take care of yourself and your writing may take care of itself.

Personal Time Management

Unless you are extremely successful or financially savvy, a lot of your ability to work creative writing into your day depends on your
personal time management.

If you get home from a day of work and plop down on the couch for the next five or so hours, it is unlikely that writing will take place (let alone inspiration for writing). Often, people use excuses like I'm not the kind of person who uses a planner, gets organized, and/or does brainstorming. Well, if you want to be a writer, sometimes you need to defy the kind of person you think you are.

No matter what tips you follow however, the big idea of all this life-altering stuff, is that if you want your results to be different you are going to have to make a change.

Creative Writing Tips

I wouldn't be much of a creative writing blogger without some legitimate creative writing tips.

I have formed many ideas about dealing with your distractions and excuses, substituting your own life into your work, and really flipping the switch to give yourself the gift of your best memories and feelings.

I make no promises that these tips will change your life or make you a better writer, but I can tell you truthfully that they have helped me. Why not take a look through and judge for yourself?

Motivation Techniques

My specialty as a blogger right now is to help people with their
motivation techniques.

My first two years out of college I was a pretty sorry writer. I would get home from a dead-end temp job (later a dead-end barista job) with no desire to do anything creative at all. I even wrote it off as me not being the kind of person who is meant to amount to anything. Well, that was dumb :).

I realized that the most successful people find a way to motivate themselves, it doesn't always come from within. I started working through every aspect of my procrastinatory existance. I am not perfect, nor will I ever be, but I have improved my daily motivation extensively.

You can change and you can improve. I am living proof.

Creative Writing Ideas

I started the site Build Creative Writing Ideas about two months ago and it's been quite a ride so far.

I've posted over 30 articles about motivation, writing exercises, and now 100 writing prompts to put yourself through :).

My objective with this website is to help people get past some of the blocks that I've experienced in the past. While I only lost about two and a half years to a lack of writing motivation and inspiration, some have lost decades, and some have only lost a couple of weeks. I want to stop that from happening right now.

Take a look at the site and if you don't find what you're looking for, feel free to comment here or there about what you'd like to see. Above all, I want to help you to succeed.

The First

Dear All,

This is the first blog post for my companion blog, Build Creative Writing Ideas dot Com. This is another way to get information from my main webpage where I've been writing articles for almost two months now.

Inspiration isn't easy for everybody. Even those who it seems easy for may be hiding their intense daily regimen from you.

A great place to begin on BCWI is with the enhancement of your motivation. If you can figure things out from the very beginning then your daily motivation will be in great shape.

I hope that I can help you reach your creative goals. Keep checking back to get the best idea of where to go from your current state.

Sincerely,
Bryan
